Some students show promise early. Others quietly redefine what excellence looks like at their age. Zachariah Ham does both!
Currently in middle school, Zachariah is already establishing himself as a phenomenal and multifaceted musician, studying both cello and drums at SOUNDS Academy. His journey in music is marked not only by talent, but by discipline, curiosity, and a maturity beyond his years.
Whether seated behind the cello with focus and precision or bringing energy and control to the drums, Zachariah demonstrates a versatility that sets him apart.
What stands out most about Zachariah is his commitment to growth. He approaches music with intention, listening closely, applying feedback, and consistently rising to the challenge of more advanced material. As he shared in his interview about his accomplishments and musical journey over the years, “At first some things were hard, but once I kept practicing, it started to make sense.” His teachers have watched him sharpen his technique, expand his musical understanding, and grow in confidence as a performer through steady, consistent work.
That dedication recently led to a major accomplishment: Zachariah earned First Place in the 2025 Arizona Musicfest, Division 1 String Competition. This achievement reflects not only his technical ability on the cello, but also his perseverance and focus. Zachariah understands that progress is built over time, saying, “If I mess up, I just keep trying until I get it,” and “I like seeing myself get better over time.”
Zachariah’s success is a reflection of what’s possible when talent meets perseverance and teamwork. He values the learning process itself, noting that “practice is important because that’s how you improve.” His ability to balance multiple instruments has also shaped how he engages with music as a whole. “The cello and drums are really different,” he shared, “but I like that because it helps me understand music in different ways.”
At SOUNDS Academy, we believe in developing the whole student. Our students thrive when they are given both resources and room to grow. Zachariah’s development reflects what can happen in an environment that values consistency, curiosity, and true community. His progress is supported by steady guidance and a culture that encourages students to take ownership of their learning. As Zachariah shared, “The teachers help me learn how to play better and stay focused,” adding that he feels “more confident when I play now than I did before.”
Zachariah exemplifies our character values of leadership, perseverance, teamwork, resilience, and creativity through his focus, preparation, and willingness to engage deeply with his material. He understands that mastery is built over time, and he approaches each lesson with patience and intention. Those qualities that extend far beyond music.
As Zachariah continues his journey, we look forward to seeing how his skills and confidence continue to develop. We are proud to have him as part of the SOUNDS Academy community and excited for what lies ahead!
Keep up the great work, Zachariah! 👏🏿👏🏿
